T-Mobile has significantly expanded its satellite-based network, T-Satellite, to include support for widely used applications such as WhatsApp, Google Maps, and X . Initially launched in July 2025, T-Satellite began with basic messaging capabilities, including SMS, MMS, and limited audio services. The recent upgrade now supports approximately a dozen applications, including Apple Music, Samsung Find, AccuWeather, Pixel Weather, and AllTrails. This expansion is facilitated through a collaboration with Apple and Google to create frameworks for SAT mode, enabling any app to adopt satellite connectivity.
The satellite network operates via more than 650 Starlink direct-to-cell satellites, ensuring that users can maintain connectivity in areas where traditional cell signals are unavailable. When a terrestrial signal is lost, devices automatically switch to the satellite network, providing essential app access, though not full data services. This feature is included at no extra charge with T-Mobile's "Experience Beyond" plan. Customers of other carriers, such as AT&T and Verizon, can add the service for $10 per month.
T-Mobile is actively encouraging more app developers to adopt SAT mode by offering API support in the App Store and Play Store.
